Jetta Day – 3 Car Reviews Packaged in a Groundhog Day Parody

While I take my job of reviewing automobiles from an eco-friendly and family-friendly point of view quite seriously, that doesn’t mean I have to always be serious when doing so.

On a number of occasions in the past, I’ve decided to incorporate various parodies or pop-culture trends into car review videos as a way of presenting relevant information in a slightly unconvential manner.  From spoofing a Superbowl ad featuring Ferris Bueller (aka Matthew Broderick) while reviewing the new Honda CR-V, to blending a car review with a local street party for the Nissan Murano, right up to being the (likely) only car review out there which incorporates a Gagnam Style dance number while looking at the Toyota Venza, I’ve always believed it’s okay to have a bit of fun while presenting my objective perspective on vehicles I review.

In my most ambitious parody yet, I’ve embraced the opportunity to review 3 different versions of the same car in a single video.  With the 1993 classic movie “Groundhog Day” as my baseline (plus a few other bits of inspiration and parody added to the mix), I’ve prepared a video review of 3 different versions of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta; the GLI, the TDI and the all new Turbo Hybrid…and then appropriately titled it “Jetta Day”.

It needs to be said that there are additional versions of the Jetta which were not included in the review such as the entry level Trendline with it’s 2.0L 115 hp engine, that is base priced at below $15,000 but basically is not much more than some sheet metal, an engine and wheels.  For the purposes of this review I went with the triple play of performance, alternative fuel and green tech as this is where I feel the majority of interest within the Jetta family is deserved.

Overall I felt that the Volkswagen Jetta family is filled with unique and even exciting options that cover a wider span of offerings than many of its competitors.  My personal favourite is the new Turbo Hybrid as it provided me with the somewhat rare combination of alternative green technology and enjoyable performance.

Bottom line though is that if you are looking at the small to mid sized sedan category for your next vehicle, there may be a version of the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta that is right for you.

NOTES: I need to offer my thanks to my family and my friends Steve and Mary Poulson for helping me put this one together.  Steve and Mary appear in many of my spoof videos because they are awesome people who love to laugh a little just like I do.  Thanks also to Tom Tetzlaff at VW Canada for agreeing to take part and to my good friend Neil Hedley (aka Dadditues) who gave me the concept idea of using Groundhog Day as a spoof!
