It seems Mazda has finally heeded the calls from drivers who more and more are demanding greater smartphone integration with the vehicles they own. And the news is good for both future and current Mazda owners.
Beginning with the updated 2019 version of their popular 3-row CX-9, Mazda will now offer both Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility. Mazda has stood out for all the wrong reasons by not being able to offer Apple Car Play as part of its Mazda Connect infotainment system – a point of contention that they are now able to move away from.
The 2018 Mazda6 and the 2019 CX-3 will be next to add the features with mid-year rolling changes. Units manufactured from September onward will have the updated Mazda Connect system included, while all other Mazda models with the exception of the MX-5 will see Mazda Connect added as part of their 2019 variation.
Now for existing Mazda owners, here’s the good news – Mazda will be making the upgrade available retroactively.
For those who purchased a 2018 Mazda6 or 2019 CX-3 that was built prior to September, Mazda Canada is offering a Mazda Connect system upgrade for a promotional price of $250. This price is available until the end of February, 2019.
As inventory levels rise of the new system, Mazda will then offer the upgrade to any of it’s previous vehicles that are equipped with Mazda Connect and an HMI Commander. The list of eligible vehicles is as follows:
Mazda3 – 2014 and beyond
Mazda6 – 2016 and beyond
MX-5 – 2016 and beyond
MX-5 RF – 2017 and beyond
CX-3 – 2016 and beyond
CX-5 – 2016 and beyond
CX-9 – 2016 and beyond
The new Mazda Connect upgrade requires the installation of an upgraded USB connection for Apple Car Play as well as a software upgrade. The work needs to be done at a Mazda dealership and requires about 1.4 hours of labour to complete. Price is set at $445 installed.
Demand is expected to be high, so it’s best to connect with your dealership to gauge when one might be able to have the modifications done.
