Enviro Dad Celebrity Gardening Challenge

One of the primary goals behind creating Enviro Dad was to develop a resource, where parents who understand that teaching environmental stewardship to their children is a critical part of parenting, can turn to for advice, inspiration and education.

This website is about environmental awareness but it’s also about being a parent.  Its a fundamental belief that parenting and environmental teaching can go hand in hand, and part of what we want to do is to create ideas and suggestions as to how to implement the two in fun and educational ways.

Gardening is one of human kind’s oldest and most time tested methods of creating sustainable food.  It also happens to be a great pastime that families have shared for generations.  It’s because of these two things that we thought it would be a great idea to create a campaign that encouraged parents to take up gardening with their children, and to grow food in your own yards that don’t need to be trucked in or hauled across the country to be enjoyed.

Enter the Enviro Dad Celebrity Gardening Challenge.

The idea is simple – recruit notable dads to either take up gardening or to continue their regular gardening practices, but with the involvement of their children and to share their experiences with readers of this site.

Our plan is to recruit possibly as many as 5 or 6 celeb dads who will each contribute periodically to the site with blogs and photos/videos of their own.  So far we have recruited these dads to take part:

Dwight Drummond – Co Anchor of CBC News – Toronto

Patrick Reynolds – Videographer and personality on CityLine

Other names will be announced as they are confirmed.  I’ll also be personally taking part in the challenge, despite the fact that I’ve never managed a garden in my life!  I’ve joked to my wife that she shouldn’t be surprised if I manage to grow sun-dried tomatoes while still on the vine, but I know that the effort in this case is more important than the actual results.

A special link will be found on the side of the Home Page throughout the campaign so be sure to check back regularly.  We will have Dwight and Eric’s first posts soon and we look forward to their participation and contributions to this unique and fun challenge!

Each celebrity gardener received a pair of gardening socks courtesy of  POLAR FEET fleece socks.
