The Harlem Globetrotters – Generations of Family Fun

One of the most enjoyable things for me as a parent and one of the greatest aspects of just being a dad, is to find opportunities where I can allow my children to experience something that I did when I was a child.

In a world of constant change – a world where children often are inundated with tales of “It wasn’t like this when I was a kid” or some variation thereof by their parents, to be able to share an experience with your children that exactly replicates what it was like for me at their age is truly something special.

Fortunately for me, one of those rare opportunities is about to happen this weeken as the world famous Harlem Globetrotters are coming to town

For those not familiar, the Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team that combine athleticism, theatre and comedy.  Now in their 86th year of operation, the Globetrotters literally span the globe with their unique brand of family sporting entertainment.  Having played in some 120 countries around the world, the Globetrotters have a winning percentage that few teams, if any can match.  According to their profile on Wikipedia, the last time the Globetrotters lost a game was March 31, 2006, when they went down 87–83 to the NABC College All-Stars.  This was just their 345th loss compared to more than 22,000 wins.

As a child back in the 1970’s and 80’s, I can remember being taken by my parents to Toronto’s old Maple Leaf Gardens to see the Globetrotters play.  I can vividly remember the magical basketball antics of such legends as Fred “Curly” Neil, Hubert “Geese” Ausbie and George “Meadowlark” Lemon.  After a game the whistling medly of “Sweet Georgia Brown” would ring in my head for days.  Now the good news is that I get to let 3 of my children enjoy the same experience this coming weekend for the 1st time.

For those living in and around the Greater Toronto Area, the Harlem Globetrotters are making their latest stop to the Rogers Centre this coming weekend.  They will be playing two games with the following schedule as follows:

Saturday, February 9th at 7:00PM – CLICK HERE for game and ticket information.

Sunday, February 10th at 2:00PM – CLICK HERE for game and ticket information.

While the entertainment value involved is certainly worth the ticket price, I’ve been able to secure a discount opportunity for readers should they wish to purchase tickets.

According to Harlem Globetrotters management:

“The only thing better than finding an event the whole family will enjoy, is getting a great deal on it.  Save $7 per ticket* by using the promo code “TOGETHER“.  Get ready to experience a show your family will remember for a lifetime!  *Discount available on select ticket levels”

I’ll be taking my son’s to the game on Sunday.  If you’re going to be there too, let me know and we can share some memories and laughs together.
