CLIF Bars Now Include Specially Designed Bars for Kids

If you’re one of those outdoorsy, adventuresome types and you’ve always enjoyed packing along a Clif Bar and it’s ‘Performance Nutrition’ mantra, you might be interested to know that they now have a specially-designed product aimed just for kids.

Clif Bars have admittedly a bit of a devoted following.  While I’ve never been a regular consumer of them I know many of the ‘Mountain Equipment Co-Op Set’ swear by them.  There is good reason I suppose, for these energy bars are organic, full of the right nutrients needed for active people, and they taste pretty good.

Apparently though, the Clif Bar was often perceived as too hefty for smaller appetites, as kids would not often be able to consume the bar.  Given the premium price, parents might be less likely to purchase one, despite the quality and otherwise compelling reasons to do so.  Whether this is a real problem or not I cannot say, but whenever there seems to be a perceived problem, there is also someone able to come up with a solution.

Enter CLIF Kid  Zbar.

The new bar is an organic, soft-baked whole grain snack bar made with a nutritious blend of carbohydrates, protein, fat and fibre that provide energy. CLIF Kid Zbar excludes the “no-no’s” such as partially-hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, synthetic preservatives and artificial flavours.

As part of their marketing blitz to get the word out, I was offered the chance to receive a sample kit so that I, along with my kids and my wife could sample the products and judge them for ourselves.  I accepted the offer and we received the kit.

I will quickly tell you that the bars met with pretty much universal approval from everyone.  The kids all said that they thought they tasted great, with each having a slight preference to one of the three available flavors (Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Brownie & Iced Oatmeal Cookie) over another.  I also liked all three but admittedly enjoyed the Chocolate Brownie version the best.

The CLIF Kids ZBar is now being rolled out and available across Canada at both select and major retailers.  They are sold in 5-count boxes, although pricing was not made available to me.

While I think that these bars are indeed a good option for our continually hungry kids, I sadly realized that I wouldn’t be able to include them as a school snack for the kids given that they are not free of nut products.  I don’t know that this bar could be made without nuts, so I understand the dilemma, but it was something I certainly would’ve considered doing had it been possible.

That said, summer is still here, the kids are still active and even during the school year there are plenty of extra-curricular activities where the organic boost provided by these bars may well come in handy!
