Be Eco-Inspired at the Toronto Green Living Show

Despite the best efforts of climate change deniers and green naysayers, it seems like the general appetite for consumers to make smarter and more environmentally friendly choices continues to grow.  For anyone looking for proof of this, all you need to do is visit the Toronto Green Living Show which is on now until Sunday, April 15th the Direct Energy Centre, located on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition and one of the great Enviro News and Events happenings taking place this weekend.

Covering 80,000 square feet and housing over 450 vendors, the show is one of the largest of its kind in Canada.  Last year’s attendance of over 30,000 during the 3 day show is expected to be eclipsed this year.

One of the more prominent images that struck me while checking out the show today was just how diverse and mainstream the visitors were.  By no means was this a show dedicated to tree huggers, but rather to a diverse cross-section of our society who all understand that we have to live our lives better and more responsibly than we have been.  It perhaps fitting then that the cross section of exhibitors spanned across everything from home energy to automobiles, personal products, food, education, government, appliances and more.

There is also an area dedicated for kids as well as stages where speakers, workshops and award presentations take place throughout the show.

Given that the weather in the GTA is not looking  too promising this weekend (although we really need the rain, so we shouldn’t complain), it might be a good idea to head down and visit the Green Living Show.  The Direct Energy Centre is easily accessible by TTC and by GO Transit and plenty of onsite parking (paid) is available.  Admission is $15 for adults (but see below), $11 for seniors and students.  Children 12 & under are Free if accompanied by an adult.

A COUPLE OF TIPS IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO

  • Thanks to Samsung, free admission will be offered to anyone who brings with them an item of electronic waste to be recycled.  A full list of what is considered eletronic waste can be found on the Green Living Show website.
  • If you have any old Vinyl Albums, old DVD’s that you don’t watch anymore or CD’s, bring them to the show.  There is a neat initiative called SWAPSITY that will be on hand and they are staging a free swap during the show.  Basically you get a credit for anything you bring and in exchange you can take something that someone brought in before you.  They expect there to be hundreds of items on display for bartering during the weekend.
  • The DVP will be closed this weekend for maintenance.  Given the effects this will have on city streets, it’s recommended that you take either TTC or GO Transit if possible.  Besides, it’s the greener alternative anyway!
